Patients who have naturally dark teeth, or in whom the discolouration or darkening of teeth is due to aging, wear or staining, require tooth whitening. If you maintain a good oral care of your teeth, some yellowing or discoloration will occur over time. This gradual change can be caused by aging, substances that stain your teeth (such as tea, coffee and tobacco), or after some dental procedures such as root canal treatment. The whitening treatments create whiter teeth Whiter teeth look better than yellow or grey teeth. Whiter teeth help create a more vibrant smile.
A tooth whitening treatment can be performed either as an at-home, dentist-supervised procedure or in the dentist's chair. On the basis of our long experience in teeth whitening, about 10 years, we prefer the combined method: first we start with the hour and a half long whitening procedure with the lamp in the office, and then we proceed with home whitening under our supervision until the ideal result is achieved. The home procedure is realized by means of mouth trays designed specifically for your mouth. They retain a mild gel whose main ingredient is carbamide peroxide. It reacts with water and release a non-toxic bleaching (hydrogen peroxide) agent.
Patients with more sensitive teeth may opt for lower gel concentrations and a longer treatment, which lasts between three and five weeks.
Research shows that tooth whitening causes no harm to teeth or gums. The obtained results can last for more than three years. After three years there is still a 60% improvement but you can re-bleach your teeth using the home trays with fresh bleaching gel.
The treatment is recommended to all patients except those younger than 18 years.
